Areas of focus

REPRODUCTION, SEXUALITY, AND THE FAMILY

Our researchers examine how the most intimate spheres of life and health - sex, sexuality, conception, menstruation, maternity, birth and family formation – are shaped by shifting cultural norms, emerging technologies, humanitarian crises, state policies, transnational activism and global geo-politics. Current projects explore a variety of themes, ranging from assisted reproductive technologies to sexual health in refugee camps to the regulation of queer migrants.

POLITICAL ECONOMY, DEVELOPMENT AND SURVIVAL

Our researchers recognize that economies are deeply gendered, shaped by layers of hidden labour and intersectional inequalities. They explore the political foundations of the economy, the efforts of international aid and finance programs to promote economic development and the gendered economic survival strategies of different communities. Current projects cover everything from feminist agricultural movements to social reproduction in refugee communities to the gendered dynamics of microfinance projects.

POLITICAL PARTICIPATION, GOVERNANCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Our researchers trace how the current political landscape, structures of global governance, expertise, and digital worlds are shaped by historical processes, intersecting inequalities, and feminist, anti-racist, and decolonial political mobilizations. Research subjects range from the racialised/gendered histories of global psychology to decolonial feminist activism to the role of sport in enhancing girls’ political citizenship.

Peace and violence

Our researchers explore violence across the spectrum: interpersonal, domestic, reproductive, public, structural, political and inter-state. They reveal the gendered, racialised and sexualised hierarchies that underlie violence and explore how different actors have tried to expand concepts of peace and human security. Research projects include analysis of global movements surrounding violence against women, women’s participation in peacekeeping, and sexual violence against men in conflict situations.
