PhD Thesis Title: Aerial Forensics
PhD Supervisor: Prof. Ravi Bhavnani
Harnessing the analytical power of geo-spatial data, 3-D modelling and satellite imagery this doctoral project is dedicated to understanding and documenting contemporary aerial warfare and its harm to civilians. It explores in particular spatial patterns of violence as well as the distinction between selective and indiscriminate violence.
Profile
Joshua obtained a Bachelor in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University College Maastricht, where he studied migration studies and conflict resolution. Following a human-rights internship in Jerusalem, he developed a strong fascination for the Middle East, leading him to study Arabic and Middle East Studies at the George Washington University in Washington DC. While pursuing his Master at IHEID, he started a research project on aerial forensics in conflict zones, which led to the current PhD research. Next to his studies, he worked at a humanitarian start-up specializing on logistical solutions for humanitarian aid in conflict areas including Ukraine and Lebanon. Additionally, he plays the violin, at times also at the Institute itself.
