New research project on migrants in vulnerable situations

Vincent Chetail, Director of the Graduate Institute's Global Migration Centre, has launched a new research project on migrants in vulnerable situations in collaboration with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Among the millions of migrants worldwide, too many are forced to embark on a dangerous journey because of a combination of intertwined reasons, such as armed conflicts, poverty, food insecurity, human rights violations, climate change or natural disasters.

Although those migrants are not always eligible for refugee status, they are still protected by international human rights law. Against this background, the research project will assess the scope and content of the principle of non-refoulement under human rights law, with the view of providing a coherent frame of protection for all migrants in a vulnerable situation.
