GISA Student and Alumni Photography Exhibition

For the first time, part of the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library will be turned into a photo gallery.

For the first time, part of the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library  will be turned into a photo gallery showcasing students’ images from around the world. The Graduate Institute Student Association (GISA) Student and Alumni Photography Exhibition will showcase current and past students’ photographs from their travels, volunteering experiences, fieldwork and other professional experiences.

In total, 46 participants submitted 91 photographs, out of which the top 20 images were chosen for display. The selection panel, comprised of Professor Davide Rodogno, Jean-David Curchod and Konstantin Klein, chose the images based on their aesthetic composition and their reflection of a social, cultural, environmental, political, economic or and legal issue relevant to international and development studies.

The diversity of these selected images represent a range of captivating locations and stories, including an indigenous protest march against land appropriation in Manila, the sport of pigeon-trapping in Cairo, stranded migrants at the Greek-Macedonian border, and the role of the traditional Guhamiriza dance in Rwanda.

These photos will be revealed at a vernissage, hosted by GISA, on Wednesday 4 May from 19:30-21:30 in the Salon Davis at the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library, Maison de la paix. The photographers in question will be present to interact with visitors and explain more about their images and stories. The photographs will remain on display until early June, and a ‘virtual exhibition’ will also be presented on the Graduate Institute and GISA websites.

Aarin Shapiro, Master candidate of Development Studies, and President of the GISA Alumni and Career Services Committee, is the main organiser of this event.“I thought the event would be a great opportunity to bring some more colour to the Institute and to highlight students’ artistic talent” says Aarin. “It also showcases the incredible diversity of our students, where they have been, and how they communicate powerful moments through a camera.”
