An Interdisciplinary Research Project to Explore the Future of Global Food and Nutrition Security

One of the biggest challenges facing society today is the widespread prevalence of hunger and food insecurity. Expanding consumption as well as volatility in global food prices over the past years has fuelled concerns about global food and nutrition security (FNS). Given that the development of societal and technological solutions requires time, long-term visions on global food and nutrition security and knowledge-based policies are required. The FoodSecure project aims to design effective and sustainable strategies for assessing and addressing the short- and long-term challenges of food and nutrition security. The project will provide a variety of analytical tools to experiment, analyse, and coordinate short- and medium-term policies. In doing so, the research will inform decision-making by a range of stakeholders in the EU and developing countries on consistent, coherent, long-term strategies to improve global FNS. CIES researchers will work specifically in the following areas: the role of innovation, research and development; institutional change policies in food and nutrition security; and institutions that support innovation in the food system.
