UN SECURITY COUNCIL TRAINING PROGRAMS

At the initiative of the UN’s Security Council Subsidiary Organizations Branch (SCSOB), the Institute entered a partnership to train UN Member States, UN officials from throughout the Secretariat, representatives of the private sector (primarily financial institutions), and recently appointed UN Panel of Experts on the design, implementation, monitoring, enforcement, and re-design of UN targeted sanctions regimes. The week-long course is organized around the “UN sanctions cycle” and is convened annually in Geneva during the month of July. It began with a pilot program in 2019 and has been offered five times since. Based on the success of the summer course, the Institute partnered with the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) to offer a three day “short” version of the course for the incoming five elected members of the UN Security Council each December in New York. This course had been offered four times to date and is part of the official SCAD orientation for new Security Council members.
