UN Global Compact for Migration – could do better

Today, 258 million people, around 3.4% of the world’s population, are living outside their country of birth. What kind of global governance framework is needed to address migration?

At a public event on 8 May, Professor Vincent Chetail assessed the challenges and opportunities of the UN Global Compact for Migration, due to be completed later this year, which aims to bring forward common principles and practices that would guide international responses to migration.

"The current draft represents a promising starting point, but UN Member States should do more and better”, said Professor Chetail, Director of the Graduate Institute’s Global Migration Centre. “It still lacks a common vision and a balanced approach to migration with due regard to the interests of all stakeholders, including the migrants themselves. The draft needs to be more systematic and comprehensive in its coverage. It must be in line with international law and grounded on best practices as well as the lessons learned from the previous standard-setting initiatives adopted during the last decade."
