Preventing Violent Extremism in the Digital Age

This toolkit explores the connection between violent extremism (VE) in Mali and the online sphere, highlighting how local grievances such as youth unemployment, ethnic tensions, and governance issues fuel the rise of extremism. As Mali's digital landscape expands, social media and the internet in general become critical spaces for both extremist recruitment and prevention efforts. Women and youth are pivotal in these efforts, with youth particularly vulnerable to radicalization due to increased internet use. By prioritizing local perspectives and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, this toolkit advocates for culturally sensitive, community-driven strategies. It emphasizes the need for innovative approaches that promote digital awareness, education, collaboration, and greater inclusion of (marginalized) communities, to effectively counter VE online.
