Gender Norms and Climate-Smart Information: Aquaculture in Northern Zambia

Climate information services (CIS) help small-scale fish farmers in northern Zambia adapt to climate change. Interviews with 14 fish farmers, 6 SMEs and 4 extension officers highlight male-biased participation in CIS. Despite changing attitudes and improved access to CIS, norms related to ownership and control of land and technology, gendered tasks and roles hinder women’s independent use of climate-smart information (CSI). The authors recommend greater coordination between stakeholders to promote gender transformation in fish farmers’ access to and use of CSI.
