Citizen Science as an Ecological Research Tool: Mapping & Monitoring Bee Mortality in Ecuador

This research is embedded in a long-term study conducted in Ecuador that aims to analyse and quantify the trajectories of local bee populations. Leveraging citizen science and open-source technologies, we designed and validated a monitoring and mapping scheme that enables Ecuadorian beekeepers to record baseline data on bee health and colony losses. The report outlines how this scheme may be used to enhance the understanding of bee mortality and inform appropriate conservation strategies. It also provides recommendations to overcome the shortcomings and limitations of the tool.
