Role of International Standards in Carbon Offsets- Exploring the Demand for Carbon Offsets in Voluntary Carbon Markets

Offsets from Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs) constitute an important component for many of the net-zero pledges, particularly for emission-intensive industries. However, concerns have been raised about the quality, efficacy, and credibility of such offsets, leading to greenwashing. This exposes a gap, which could possibly be plugged by standard setting organisations such as the ISO. This allows us to explore the role of international standards in carbon offsetting to achieve net-zero in VCMs, with a specific case study from the oil and gas sector.
