Sustainable Trade and Finance

Assessing the Impact of Trade Facilitation Reforms on the Environment

This research project explores the complex nexus between trade and the environment, and seeks to map out how trade facilitation reforms can reduce the carbon footprint of cross-border trade at border crossings. Through desk research, expert interviews, and fieldwork at the Uganda-Kenya border, the report recommends 3 key channels for the improvement of trade facilitation through better governmental collaboration, more efficient border processes, and infrastructure development. Lastly, further avenues for research are identified to compute the global environmental effects of trade facilitation.
