The members of the World Trade Organization regards dispute settlement as one of the central pillar of the multilateral trading system and vitally important to the global economy. Since 1995, over 500 disputes have been brought to the WTO and over 350 rulings have been issued.

On Thursday, 3rd May the Graduate Institute’s Centre for Trade and Economic Integration held its Annual Update on WTO Dispute Settlement. Initiated by Joost Pauwelyn in 2008, the Update is now in its 11th year.

Amb. Junichi Ihara (Chairperson of the 2017 WTO Dispute Settlement Board) and Amb. Ujal Singh Bhatia (Chairperson of the WTO Appellate Body) gave an overview of activities during 2017. The formal presentations were followed by a lively panel discussion with Maria Alcover of the Advisory Centre on WTO Law and law firm practitioners Rambood Behboodi, Nadiya Nychay and Colette van der Ven. The event was chaired by CTEI Visiting Fellow Robert McDougall.
