Thomas Schultz received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Geneva and the European Academy of Legal Theory in Brussels. He has worked for the University of Geneva, King’s College London, the University of Cambridge, the Graduate Institute, and a law firm in Nice, France. He also acts as arbitrator in commercial arbitrations. Thomas is currently Professor of International Arbitration at the University of Geneva, Professor of Law at King’s College London, and Visiting Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute. From 2018 to 2021, he was Co-Director of the Center for International Dispute Settlement (CIDS).
Thomas was the leading founder and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Dispute Settlement.
His work has been awarded the Jubilee Prize of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has also been a Swiss National Science Foundation Research Professor and a Swiss National Science Foundation Ambizione Fellow.
Research interests
Current research interests include the privatisation of justice, reform dynamics of international justice systems, and psychological mechanisms driving the production of international legal scholarship. He is also finishing a book with Niccolò Ridi and Jason Mitchenson on the role of comity in ‘rehumanising’ interactions among legal systems and among legal actors (Cambridge University Press), and is working on a book with Cédric Dupont and Jason Yackee on investment arbitration as a political system (Oxford University Press) and on an arbitration textbook with Stavros Brekoulakis (Hart/Bloomsbury).
