Salvatore Lombardo is an Italian national who holds a Bachelor and master’s degrees in international law from the Catholic University of Milan (Italy) and Cambridge University (UK) respectively.

He Joined UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in 1986 and served in various positions in Djibouti, Cambodia, Lebanon, Congo, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, Afghanistan, and at its HQ in Geneva and New York. From 2008 to 2015 he worked for UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) as Director in Lebanon and later as Director of External Relations and Communications Department in Jerusalem. He returned to UNHCR in 2015. His last assignment was UNHCR Chief of Staff until he retired in December 2020. Currently he teaches at Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), Sciences Po in Paris.

His principal areas of expertise include humanitarian affairs, refugee rights, international affairs, strategic planning and partnership, negotiations, programme and resource management
