Jiajia Liu’s PhD dissertation “Financial Capitalism on the Periphery: the Rubber Boom and Bust in Shanghai” investigates the financial capitalism in late Qing China under the influence of Western capitalism. Her research is featured in a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods in the study of a financial bubble of rubber stocks on the Shanghai Stock Exchange between 1910 and 1911. She also draws a comparison with that on the London Stock Exchange, and explores its origins in the Amazon and Southeast Asia. Jiajia holds two master’s degrees – Master in International Studies (specialized in Korean studies) from Seoul National University with scholastic achievement award, and Master in International Affairs from the Graduate Institute, Geneva. Chinese (mandarin) is her mother tongue. She is fluent in English and Korean (master's theses in both languages), has a working knowledge of French and Cantonese, and reads Japanese kanji.
