Profile

Carlo Edoardo Altamura is a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Ambizione Research Fellow at the Department of International History since March 2019. He is the Principal Investigator of the research project entitled Business with the Devil? Assessing the Financial Dimension of Authoritarian Regimes in Latin America, 1973-85.
 The four-year project investigates the interactions between international financial institutions, Western commercial banks and authoritarian regimes in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

After obtaining a double PhD in Economic and Social History from the University of Geneva and Uppsala University, he was awarded the 'Eugène Choisy and Charles Borgeaud postdoctoral fellowship' from the Academic Society of Geneva and held visiting positions at Waseda University, the University of Cambridge and at the Centro de Estudios Históricos, El Colegio de México. His current interests lie in post-war international financial history in the West and in the developing world, the historical origins of financial globalisation and the political uses of debt.
