Two CIES members at the Global South Workshop in Beijing

This month, two members of the CIES, Prof. Anne Saab, Assistant Professor and International Law and CIES Associated Faculty, and Giulia Valacchi, PhD candidate in International Economics, attended and presented their work on environmental issues at the Global South Doctoral Workshop.

The Global South Workshop is an opportunity for doctoral students from universities in southern developing countries to participate to a week of discussion of their thesis with professors and students from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. This year, the workshop was organised on May 2-6, 2016 in Beijing jointly by the Graduate Institute and the School of International Studies at Peking University.

Anne Saab, Assistant Professor in International Law, gave a keynote speech on 'Climate Change and International Law' and chaired a panel of doctoral students in law, working mainly on trade law and environmental issues. The workshop was a great opportunity to engage with students and faculty from PKU and elsewhere.

Giulia Valacchi, PhD candidate in International Economics, presented her work from the COSTASSESS project on "Buy coal or kickstart green? A North-South perspective".

"The Global South Workshop was a great experience both on the personal and the academic side. I have never participated to a workshop with such a variety (geographical, academical and cultural) in the participants' spectrum. Interacting with many different people in different field gave me a greater understanding of my research project. The cultural confrontation was one key aspect of the experience: the group of students involved was very diverse and we loved spending time together exchanging our different experiences in research and life. I think all of us has been enriched by this workshop; we created strong links and I am sure we will keep in contact also in the future. It was really a great experience and I strongly recommend it to all future participants."
