Trespassing methods in political research

Matias Lopez is in conversation with Jake Bowers in the new episode of our podcast series

This new episode of the Research at the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy (RAHCD) podcast marks the beginning of a new miniseries on methods.
Matias Lopez postdoctoral researcher at the centre begins this series questioning the methods and debates that exist in today’s social science research landscape.

In this episode, he is in conversation with leading political methodologist Jake Bowers, Professor of Political Science and Statistics and NCSA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigna. In his career spanning both academia and public service, Jake Bowers has made key contributions to essential problems related to the choice and use of methods in political research.

Together they engage in a stimulating discussion on social science methods, heated debates in the discipline, including the differences between model-based and design-based research, and the role of P values in the social sciences, and of course in research on democracy.

Tune in to learn more about the research design and the different approaches that should be taken into account to provide accurate and useful results. Learn about Jake Bowers’ project to bring these methods into uncharted territory through his new book and other projects, and of course stick around for the age-old debate of quantitative vs. qualitative research.

Stay tuned for future parts of this series on methods and research and fascinating interviews with experts in the field.
