Top 10 Graduate Institute News Items of 2021

Although 2021 was another year marked by the COVID pandemic, that didn't stop our faculty, students and experts from trailblazing new paths, research, and ideas, even with stay-at-home recommendations and distance learning in place. Here we've rounded up a list of our top 10 news items from this year, proof that even a global pandemic can't stop us from our mission of nurturing students and professionals to become decision makers open to the world.

10. Greening International Trade: Pathways Forward

Discussions of environment-trade issues are notoriously complex, cluttered with legalistic and technical language, and frequently opaque. As such, environmental stakeholders require information and tools to effectively engage in the trade policy arena. The Global Governance Centre's Senior Researcher, Carolyn Deere Birkbeck, published Greening International Trade, a paper serving as a non-technical entry point for actors keen on navigating the environment-trade policy conversation and promoting sustainable trade. 

9. Following Her Dream to Make a Difference

Project Officer at BBC Media Action, Tarana Faroqi is also the Program Director-India for the Peacebuilding Project, where she launched the first Rohingya vocational education initiative in Khajuri Khas Delhi. She earned her Master in International Affairs in 2018. 

8. Cambridge Scholar Reflects on His Time at the Institute

After completing his degree in International Economics at the Institute, Kishen Shastry (MA, ‘20) was given the opportunity to study and research at the University of Cambridge. For Kishen, the Institute provided a stepping stone for more great things to come. 

7. Capstone Winners: Students' Innovative Solutions to Global Challenges

Capstone Projects are part of the Interdisciplinary Masters Programme, and are designed to provide innovative solutions to global challenges, while also allowing students a glimpse into the inner workings of some of the world's most prestigious private and non-profit organisations. The five best projects from 2020 were selected by a committee of faculty members, and are highlighted here. 

6. Life Lessons from a “Master of None”

Recent graduate Apoorva Bose's life has been a panoply of interests ranging from the arts to international law. Yet with multiple passions, she soon found herself unsure of where her focus should lay. In a TedX Talk, she discusses her struggle and how she found her path to harmony amongst an internal cacophony. 

5. New assistant professors in the department of international economics

Two new faculty members will join the Economics community at the Institute as of September 2021. We are very pleased to welcome Yuan Zi and Imelda, who specialise respectively in trade, and environmental and resource economics as new assistant professors in the department.

What Matters Today is a current affairs podcast series featuring Graduate Institute faculty commenting on the most pressing global issues impacting, economics, politics, health, and society.

3. New specialised track in sustainable finance and development

The rapid transformation of the financial sector with an emphasis on environmental sustainability, social responsibility, inclusion, and impact measurement creates exciting new career opportunities. 

To meet the growing demands of financial institutions - private, public, and international - and the interest of students who want to make a positive impact on world development, the Graduate Institute launched a new track in Sustainable Finance and Development within its Master in International Economics in September 2021.
