Sustainability Week 2025

Every spring, students from the Graduate Institute Student Association’s Environmental Committee organise and promote Sustainability Week Geneva events, in coordination with the University of Geneva, to ensure that engagement in sustainability remains a core subject at the Institute and beyond.

Head of Communications of the Environmental Committee, Chloe Chmelar discusses the upcoming week.

What does Sustainability Week contribute to the larger conversation on environmental issues?

Sustainability Week is a fantastic opportunity to engage both students and the surrounding community in sustainability through exciting workshops and activities. It not only makes learning about sustainability fun and interactive but also fosters connections between students, experts in the field, and local organizations. This way we can create a network of environmental sustainability empowerment. This is where we can foster conversations on environmental issues and inspire lasting change and work on creating a more sustainable future.

What kinds of activities are you looking forward to and outcomes do you hope to achieve?

The Environmental Committee’s Sustainability Week Team has put together an incredible lineup of events this year—it’s hard to choose what I’m most excited about! From farm visits and panel discussions to clothing swaps and bike repair workshops, there’s truly something for everyone. I’m looking forward to seeing students and community members get involved, and I hope that each person who attends leaves with new knowledge about sustainability and a practical way to incorporate it into their daily life.

What is the number one thing members of the Institute community can do on a personal level to make their everyday lives more sustainable?

The most important thing members of the Institute community can do to live more sustainably is to stay informed. Awareness is key—understanding the sustainable choices available to you makes it easier to integrate them into daily life. Whether it’s properly sorting waste, donating clothes to local charities, or supporting local businesses, there are countless ways to make a difference. The more informed we are, the more impact we can have!
