Shanker Das Bairagi named Ambassador for Nepal

The Alumnus took up the post representing his country to the UN in February.

Shanker Das Bairagi, officially nominated Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, joins the prestigious ranks of other Institute graduates who have earned positions representing their nations to international organisations. Alumni have also recently become permanent representatives for countries such as Angola, China, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

Prior to his appointment in Geneva, Shanker Das Bairagi held the post of Deputy Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations in New York. He previously established the Embassy of Nepal in Canberra, Australia and served as Deputy Chief of Mission there until 2009. Between 2000 and 2004, Shanker Das Bairagi was Counsellor/Minister and Counsellor Deputy Chief of Mission to the Benelux countries at the Mission of Nepal to the European Union in Brussels. He was Second and First Secretary at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi from 1995 to 1998.

Shanker Das Bairagi started his career with the Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990 working on India-Bhutan relations and subsequently was in the United Nations and International Law Division at the Ministry. Later, he served as Under-Secretary in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Division. He also worked in the Office of the Foreign Minister and in the Europe-America Division.

Shanker Das Bairagi completed a law degree at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1989. He carried out diplomatic training at the Graduate Institute in 1992 and 1993 and followed with a Master in Political Science at Tribhuvan University again in 1995. He also studied European integration and development at the University of Brussels where he obtained a second master’s degree in 2002.
