Rethinking global health policy in the wake of Ebola

The ongoing Ebola epidemic has epitomised the need for the international community to develop governance mechanisms to effectively address global health crises. In particular, the responsibilities of different actors at the national and international levels need to be clarified, and tools developed to ensure a quick and coordinated response. Moreover, to enable the World Health Organization to make a difference, member states must devote more resources to the Organization's regular budget.

This case for rethinking global health policy following Ebola emergency relief was the subject of Bayern 2’s Dossier Politik interview with Professor Ilona Kickbusch, Director of the Global Health Programme, and Dr. Maximilian Gertler, epidemiologist and Board Member, Doctors Without Borders, Germany, conducted in German by Ina Krauss on 3 December 2014.

Professor Kickbusch emphasized that "[i]t is important to invest in building stronger national health systems and we need to address the current shortage and lack of training of health personnel. In the long-term, systematic interventions and a strong political will to invest at both the national and international level will continue to be essential".
