POURQUOI PARLER DE MILEI À GENÈVE?

A Democracy Week roundtable explored drivers of the support for Javier Milei’s ideological proposals and their implications for democracy.

In the context of global democratic decline and the rise of the far right, Argentina's Javier Milei has become the world’s first anarcho-libertarian president. In a country marked by cyclical economic crises, Milei, the founder and leader of La Libertad Avanza, tapped into the deep-seated frustrations and anger within society. On 1 October, a seminar with students, followed by a public roundtable, examined the factors driving support for these ideological movements and their broader implications for Argentina, the region, and the world.

The roundtable featured contributions from Isolda Agazzi, expert at Alliance Sud and author of lignesdhorizon.net; Myrna Insua, Professor and researcher at Argentina’s National University Arturo Jauretche; and Yanina Welp, Research Fellow at the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy. The discussion was chaired by Valeria Wagner, Professor at the University of Geneva.

This event took place as part of the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy’s programme for Democracy Week 2024. It was co-organised with the University of Geneva and Latino Lab.
