New Research Project Explores Care Practices at Europe’s External Borders

A new research project at the Global Migration Centre is challenging conventional narratives around Europe’s migration policies by exploring an often-overlooked dimension: care.

The Global Migration Centre has launched a pioneering research project titled “Beyond Bare Life: Caring for the Body at Europe’s External Borders.” Led by sociocultural anthropologist Dr. Anne-Line Rodriguez, this Swiss National Science Foundation-funded initiative aims to examine the care practices produced by sub-Saharan migrants in the Maghreb region.

Dr. Rodriguez, whose research has previously focused on the ethnographic study of migration governance in urban Senegal, will spearhead this project. Her work has notably examined the experiences of migrants following assisted voluntary returns and deportations from North Africa and Europe to Senegal. In her role at the Global Migration Centre, Dr. Rodriguez will explore themes of mutuality and care among sub-Saharan migrants in transit.

The “Beyond Bare Life” project seeks to provide an in-depth understanding of the complexities surrounding care practices at Europe’s external borders, shedding light on the lived experiences of migrants in these regions.
