Event Summary
Presenter: Master Student Léa Sentenac
Discussant: Professor Aidan Russell
On the second instalment of this semester’s History Brunches, which took place on April 31st 2022, Master Student Léa Sentenac presented her work exploring the cultural representation of the Pied Noirs in France through an in-depth analysis of popular media, news outlets and existing literature. Among other things, Léa’s research teases out the difference between representation in popular cultural as popular object versus representation as a subject by juxtaposing different representations produced by the Pied Noirs against those produced about the Pied Noirs. By bringing together fine grained cultural analysis with the contextual knowledge of modern French history, Léa’s work makes a contribution to both the particular experience of the Pied Noirs in France and the wider literature dealing with cultural representation of minority groups within modern nation-states. Professor Aidan Russell provided an insightful commentary on the presentation, which was followed by a lively Q&A session.
