The Law of the Sea Reading Club and Student Seminar | Spring’ 25

Geneva Graduate Institute Students of the Law of the Sea Reading Club and Student Seminar, guided by faculty mentors this spring, will delve into the intricate world of ocean governance and the law of the Sea through a series of focused presentations. This semester, eight students will share their insights on a variety of topics related to the law of the sea, allowing for a dynamic exchange of ideas and critical discussions 
 

Presentations will illuminate contemporary issues in ocean management and reflect the diverse perspectives that the program encourages. Participants will not only engage with significant academic literature but also benefit from the vibrant discourse fostered by their peers, enhancing their understanding of this essential field.

Session Highlights:

Session 1 (27 February): Ela Gokcigdem presents “Enclosed Sea, Global Implications,” exploring governance strategies for the Turkish Marmara Sea.

Session 2 (20 March): Debolina Bhatt discusses “Deep Seabed Mining: Developments in Norway,” focusing on legal advancements and their environmental implications.

Session 3 (10 April): Navaranjini Nadarajah, A LLM student presents her thesis on “Maritime Attacks by Non-State Armed Actors,” examining legal aspects of Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping.

Session 4 (15 May): Joachim Strzelecki shares insights from his MA thesis on the impact of climate change on transboundary fisheries governance.

Session 5 (22 May): Nart Karacay discusses legal frameworks surrounding access to the strategically significant Dardanelles and Bosphorus Straits.

Session 6 (19 June): Laisa Branco presents her research on transaction cost theories and marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Session 7 (14 July): Li Ningxiner evaluates legal tools under the BBNJ Agreement for protecting marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions.

This spring, we invite all selected participants to join us for these informative sessions that will enhance our collective understanding of crucial maritime issues and foster a vibrant academic community.
