Kofi Annan Opens Academic Year

Delivers a lecture on extractives in Africa.

To celebrate the Institute moving into the Maison de la paix, Kofi Annan delivered the opening lecture of the academic year 2013-2014 entitled "Equity in Extractives: Managing Africa's Mineral Wealth".

Mr. Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the United Nations in 2001. He currently heads the Kofi Annan Foundation and recently launched the West Africa Commission on the Impact of Drugs on Governance, Security and Development. In 2012 he was UN–Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria.

Mr Annan is an Alumnus and longtime patron of the Graduate Institute.
