Interview with New GISA President Angello A. Leon Mejía

Angello A. Leon Mejía is the Geneva Graduate Institute Student Association (GISA)'s new President for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to the Geneva Graduate Institute?

My name is Angello Armando Leon Mejia. I was born in the United States to Honduran parents and spent my early years in Honduras, where I graduated from the Lycée Franco-Hondurien. Growing up in a multicultural environment shaped my perspective and sparked my interest in international affairs from an early age. I went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies & Diplomacy at the University of New Orleans. Afterward, I gained hands-on experience in public service, working with the Community Development Department of my local government.

When looking for a master’s program, the Geneva Graduate Institute stood out for its reputation, diverse community, and location at the heart of international diplomacy. My time here has been incredibly rewarding, deepening my understanding of global issues and fostering meaningful connections with peers and faculty alike.

What do you hope to achieve as GISA President?

As GISA President, my primary goal is to ensure that GISA operates efficiently and represents all students' voices effectively. Building on the groundwork laid by my predecessor, I aim to strengthen our relationship with the administration and advocate for initiatives that matter to our community. I want to create an inclusive environment where every student feels empowered to engage, share their concerns, and participate in our collective efforts to make a positive impact. My efforts are going towards improving the quality of life for students when it comes to housing, academics and activities with the help of the board and the student initiatives.

What impact would you like to see GISA have in the 2024-2025 academic year?

I want GISA to be a true advocate for students, one that listens actively and takes tangible steps to address their concerns. This year, my focus is on enhancing transparency and communication, promoting student-led initiatives, and providing more opportunities for professional and personal development. I hope to make GISA a platform where students feel confident that their voices are heard and where their contributions help shape our shared experience at the Graduate Institute.
