The IEA Fellow title is for life and is given in recognition of excellence in research and in research-driven contributions to popular writing, economics curriculum building and policy work. This honorific title is not just a recognition of pioneering research but is meant to stimulate younger economists around the world to do better research and influence professionalism in development policymaking.

The IEA was founded in 1950 as a Non-Governmental Organization, at the instigation of the Social Sciences Department of UNESCO. Its aim from the beginning has been to promote personal contacts and mutual understanding among economists in different parts of the world through the organization of scientific meetings, common research programs and by means of publications of an international character on problems of current importance. With the purpose of recognizing individual outstanding contributions in the profession in 2017 the IEA decided to institute these two honorific titles conferred every three years in the case of the Schumpeter-Haberler Distinguished Fellow award and yearly for the IEA Fellow award. Candidates for the awards are nominated by the IEA Council of member associations and the Executive Committee of the IEA. A nominating committee, chaired by Sir Timothy Besley, past President of IEA, follows an arduous process of reviewing and selecting nominations and granting the awards.
The next Schumpeter-Haberler Distinguished Fellow award will be granted in 2023 while the IEA Fellow award will be conferred in 2022.
