In this episode, the co-hosts Paola Gaeta and Antonio Coco discuss with Andrew Clapham the contributions of Antonio Cassese (‘Nino’) to the development of the protection of human rights in the European legal space by leading an impactful research group at the European University Institute (EUI).
Edited by Nino himself, Joseph Weiler and Andrew Clapham, the group produced a pioneering three-volume study : ‘European Union: the Human Rights Challenge’ (published in 1992).
The episode includes a testimony on that endeavour by Philip Alston, who led another study at the EUI together with Joseph Weiler. The study eventually contributed to the adoption of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in 2000.
