Exploring Challenges and Successes in the Energy Transition: A Public Lecture by Prof. Mar Reguant

Drawing from her extensive research, Prof. Reguant explored the intricacies of transitioning to renewable energy through case studies from Spain, Chile, and the United States. She highlighted critical challenges such as the intermittency of renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the inadequacy of existing infrastructure, and the issue of stranded assets, including coal plants.

Prof. Reguant also delved into the complexities of market design and regulatory structures, focusing on how these factors influence the integration of renewable energy and the retirement of fossil     fuel assets. Notably, she discussed the delays caused by regulatory frameworks in the United States, which hinder the transition away from traditional energy sources.

Despite these hurdles, Prof. Reguant emphasized the substantial progress already made in renewable energy development and the transformative potential of expanding infrastructure to accommodate cleaner energy sources. She underscored the importance of addressing these challenges collaboratively to ensure a successful shift to a low-carbon future.

The engaging lecture concluded with a lively Q&A session, where participants from diverse backgrounds exchanged ideas on accelerating the energy transition. The event reaffirmed the Hoffmann Centre's commitment to fostering dialogue and innovation in addressing global sustainability challenges.
