On October 7, 2016 the American Society of International Law has nominated Emeritus Professor Georges Abi-Saab to be the recipient of one of the three American Society of International Law honors, the Manley O. Hudson Medal. This honour is awarded to a distinguished person of American or other nationality for outstanding contributions to scholarship and achievement in international law. Professor Abi-Saab’s preeminent contributions in the practice, service and scholarship of international law led to his nomination by the Committee.
The Honors Committee acknowledged Professor Abi-Saab's distinguished record of service as a judge and adjudicator in many international disputes. Additionally, his renowned judicial and diplomatic achievements in international law have influenced his ability to communicate the importance of international law to scholarly and public audiences through his many publications. Moreover as an academic, Professor Abi-Saab inspired several generations of international law students during his lengthy and fruitful years at the Graduate Institute from 1963 to 2000.
Following the memorandum put forward, the American Society of International Law Executive Council has unanimously approved the nominations of the 2016-2017 Honors Committee for recipients of the Society's top awards at the Annual Meeting. Thus, the Manley O. Hudson Medal for pre-eminent scholarship and achievement in international law will be awarded to Professor Abi-Saab.
With over a century of experience, the American Society of International Law Annual meeting has become the most important gathering in the field of international law. This year the 111th American Society of International Law Annual Meeting will take place on April 12-15, 2017 in Washington, DC.
