COVID-19 and Reframing the Discourse on Global Health Equity

Challenges, trade-offs and opportunities.

Moderated by Sherine El Taraboulsi-McCarthy (Director, NatCen International), Tammam Aloudat (Managing Director, Global Health Centre), Priya Khambhaita (Co-Director, National Centre for Social Research), Luisa Enria (Social Scientist) discuss global health equity, as a cornerstone of sustainable development and as key to global health security.

They underline that, despite decades of policy engagement in championing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the ongoing commitment to “leaving no one behind” and several other international frameworks, the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that commitments to health equity have failed to materialise in practice and to provide equal access to vaccines globally.

They explore the challenges and opportunities in global health equity, including questions related to the discourse on global health equity since the outbreak of Covid-19 and the trade-offs of ensuring equitable access to healthcare.
