CIES contribution to COP21 in Paris

In order to reach a new universal climate agreement, the delegates of the 195 States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will meet in Paris from November 30 to December 11, 2015.

The COP21 conference is crucial because the expected outcome is a new international agreement on climate change, applicable to all, to keep global warming below 2°C.

CIES contributes to COP21 by engaging with both academics and policymakers into a number of events in November and December 2015:

  • November 24, 12.30-13.30, Professors Liliana Andonova and Anne Saab will introduce the negotiations to the students' and policy community during a Policy Briefing on "COP 21 and Climate Change: A look ahead", (Auditorium A2). Register here.
  • November 24, 18.30-20.00, Professor Laura Diaz Anadon from the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard will discuss the importance of advancing clean energy technologies to combat climate change. Register here.
  • December 14-15, Paris. Researchers from CIES, including Prof Liliana Andonova and Dr. Joelle Noailly, will present their research results during the OECD "Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum" during a side-event co-organized together with UNEP.

Along the year 2015, CIES researchers have contributed to several important events related to COP21:

  • In July 2015, Joëlle Noailly joined the largest forum for the scientific community to come together ahead of the COP21 at the Our Common Future conference in July 2015 in Paris.
  • In June 2015, Prof. Liliana Andonova opened the lecture on the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report.
  • In May 2015, CIES invited Dr Birgit Lode from the Institute for Advanced Sustainability studies to present her work on the legal design of the 2015 Climate Agreement.
  • In February 2015, CIES co-organized a workshop on Non State Actor Zone for Climate Action bringing together participants from climate initiatives, data platforms, supportive governments, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and observers and advocates of “bottom up” climate action. The workshop produced a concrete set of refined recommendations to guide the development of the NAZCA platform to Paris and beyond.
