This summer Catherine Bauman will go to the village of Kigutu to become the education director at Village Health Works, a health clinic founded in 2007 by Deogratias Niyizonkiza, the subject of the New York Times bestselling book “Strength in What Remains”.

Catherine has dedicated her education and professional career to advancing the rights of children throughout the world. She has worked and done internships at UNICEF and several non-profit organisations focusing on child rights issues. While in Geneva, she worked with child migrants from Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan and Iran. Last year she spent time in Guinea-Bissau writing a report for the Committee on the Rights of the Child. Previously, she taught English in French Guiana.

From Danville, Virginia, in the United States, Catherine has a double-major bachelor degree in government and the French language from the University of Virginia. While at the Graduate Institute she was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.

“I want to continue in this field of children’s rights and education in developing countries,” Catherine said. “There is reason for hope. There has been progress, but there is still more to be done.”
