Bombs, Banks and Sanctions

Professor Mallard will lead a new project on Bombs, Banks and Sanctions, which will investigate the legal nature of nuclear proliferation.

Grégoire Mallard, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute, will lead a new project entitled Bombs, Banks and Sanctions. Along with fellow researchers Anna Hanson and Farzen Sabet, Professor Mallard will investigate the transnational legal nature of nuclear nonproliferation from a sociological perspective by evaluating how sanctions against nuclear proliferators are creating new rules for the banking sector.

The project will assess how the private sector is involved in the formulation of policies to ensure greater financial transparency, which is, in turn, transforming the field of international law, where policy-making has been traditionally reserved for institutions within the public sector. Under the auspices of the Global Governance Centre, this project is scheduled to run from March 2017 until February 2022.
