Given present and future technical developments in generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, there is a pressing need to understand and anticipate its geopolitical implications, especially in times of crisis of multilateralism. What are the present geopolitical implications of generative AI systems ? What are the future scenarios to consider for geopolitics and AI? How can businesses, governments and civil society prepare to harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding against the inherent risks.

These are the questions that will be adressed by a lineup of distinguished speakers during a panel discussion at AI House Davos in January 2024.

This session will discuss the geopolitical risks and opportunities of AI developments for businesses, governments and civil society.

Anticipation can help identify the emergence of opportunities and the geopolitical conditions conducive to making them available to the various stakeholders. Given present and future technical developments in generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, there is a pressing need to understand and anticipate its geopolitical implications, especially in times of crisis of multilateralism. As countries compete for AI supremacy, tensions intensify over its economic benefits, military technological supremacy, and the power to influence the production and distribution of information. Competition is taking place against a backdrop of a lack of global governance and international standards for a technology considered as transformative as the Internet, intensifying conflicts over data sovereignty, intellectual property, access to natural resources, and the capacity to innovate and shape the futures.

With the significant challenges that lie ahead, we must create opportunities not only for collective exploration and understanding, but also for the deployment of new visions, constructive solutions, and propositions for desirable, sustainable, inclusive, and plural futures. Our expertise and research in the social sciences allow us to nurture these visions and propositions, which in turn must guide the development of current and future technologies.

Marie-Laure Salles, Director of the Geneva Graduate Institute.
