Health has so far not been on the G20's agenda, but this year – under the German presidency – there will be a health ministers meeting and health will be part of the overall G20 summit statement. Is the G20, which was created for global financial governance reasons, an appropriate forum to get health on the global political agenda? By discussing health, is the G20 in competition with WHO or can it support WHO?  Are the health priority areas chosen by the German G20 presidency the most important? What are the dynamics created once a policy area is chosen to be considered by G20?

Ilona Kickbusch is the Director of the Global Health Centre and Adjunct Professor at the Graduate Institute. She has been deeply involved in the development of the Health 2020 European health policy framework. She was recently awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in recognition of her invaluable contributions to innovation in governance for global health and global health diplomacy.
