The war in Ukraine has already triggered a plethora of commentary. Much of it has stated the obvious: the Russian invasion of Ukraine constitutes an egregious breach of several fundamental rules of the international legal order. However, less thought has been given to the broader ramifications of the conflict. What does the Russian invasion augur for the future of the international legal order? Are we headed towards a system in which, as Thucydides famously observed, “the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must?”
