The Sources of International Law and the International Law Commission

The aim of the event is to discuss current issues on the work of the International Law Commission relating to the sources of international law, in particular treaty law, customary international law, general principles of law and peremptory norms of general international law (jus cogens).
 

Programme:

  • Introduction by Vincent Chetail, Professor of International Law and Head of the International Law Department of the Graduate Institute
  • Opening speech and presentation of the book, The Sources of International Law (2nd edition) by Hugh Thirlway, former Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute.


Panel 1 - Treaty law

  • Lucius Caflisch, former Chairperson of the UN International Law Commission and Special Rapporteur on the effects of armed conflicts on treaties, Emeritus Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute
  • Eric Wyler, Lecturer of International law at the Graduate Institute


Panel 2 - Customary international law

  • Michael Wood, Member of the UN International Law Commission and Special Rapporteur on the identification of customary international law
  • Peter Haggenmacher, Emeritus Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute


Panel 3 – General principles of law

  • Marcelo Vázquez-Bermúdez, Member of the UN International Law Commission and Special Rapporteur on general principles of law
  • Nico Krisch, Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute

 

Panel 4 – Jus cogens

  • Dire Tladi, Member of the UN International Law Commission and Special Rapporteur on peremptory norms of general international law (jus cogens)
