The struggle against Child, Early and Forced marriages, a critical issue for the UN Human Rights Council.

Child, early and forced marriages affect nearly fifteen million girls each year around the world. The Human Rights Council has recognised the practice as a violation of human rights, and has been leading targeted efforts since 2013, notably via the unanimous adoption of a resolution calling for strengthened efforts to prevent and eliminate this harmful practice. But how can the phenomenon be most effectively addressed?

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Human Rights Council, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights and the Graduate Institute invite you to a film screening and debate.

Sonita would have liked to be the daughter of Rihanna and Michael Jackson rather than an illegal immigrant in Iran, but she doesn't let that get her down. Not worrying about the fact that women aren't allowed to sing, or that her family would like to sell her off for marriage, she records a rap album about forced marriage. A cinematic revelation, Sonita won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Sonita (2015, 90 minutes, English/Farsi) will be followed by a panel debate on the subject of child marriage, featuring:

  • Dubravka Šimonović, United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences
  • Andrea Bianchi, Professor of international law, The Graduate Institute, Geneva
  • Mohinder Watson, Founder, Action on Child, Early and Forced Marriage; Geneva UN Representative for the International Alliance of Women

Entry is free, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
