This workshop is co-organized by the Centre de Philanthropie (UNIGE), AHCD (IHEID) and Socio-Genève network, in partnership with HETS-HES-SO.
We are pleased to announce a unique opportunity for graduate students to participate in a two-hour workshop with Professor Michèle Lamont, renowned Harvard sociologist and author of the newly published Seeing Others: How Recognition Works and How It Can Heal a Divided World.
This interactive session will focus on applying Professor Lamont’s insights on recognition, solidarity, and social divides to the work of emerging scholars.
What to Expect
- Brief Presentation by Professor Lamont: Insights from Seeing Others and its relevance to sociology and anthropology.
- Live Feedback on Student Research: Selected students will present their work and receive tailored commentary.
- Open Q&A and Discussion: Explore questions on research methods, publication strategies, and more.
How to Apply
- Eligibility: Doctoral students in Sociology, Anthropology, or related fields at UNIGE and IHEID.
- Submission: Please send a 2-page research summary to democracy.applications@graduateinstitute.ch. Your summary should outline:
- Main research question(s)
- Methods and any preliminary findings
- How your work connects to or could benefit from Professor Lamont’s work on recognition and social divides
- Deadline: April 16, 2025
- Selection: Approximately 20 participants will be selected to ensure diversity of perspectives. Notifications will be sent by April 18.

Each student gives a 2-minute lightning talk and Professor Lamont gives 5 minutes of group feedback per group
