Organised by the Centre for International Environmental Studies Programme on Institutions for Sustainable Development, this two-day symposium will gather some of the most prominent thinkers in contemporary international environmental law and policy (IEL) in order to provide specific answers to the question of how the private sector can be harnessed for environmental protection.
Topics will include:
- A critical assessment of the techniques used so far to implement IEL
- An in-depth analysis of the tools that could be used to incentivise the participation of the private sector (e.g. environmental finance, mechanisms such as the CDM, JI or REDD, benefit sharing arrangements, insurance schemes, and environmental goods and services)
- The tools to govern the new involvement of the private sector in environment-related projects abroad (through mechanisms such as FDI dispute settlement, CSR and new accountability mechanisms, transnational environmental contracts, socially responsible investment guidelines, and environmental litigation)
