What are the links between African states and key Asian financial centres?

In this research seminar co-organised by the Graduate Institute's Centre for Finance and Development and UNIGE's Geneva Africa Lab, Ricardo Soares de Oliveira will examine the causes behind Africa’s increased engagement with financial centres such as Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong, and will focus on the potential domestic impact on African growth and development.

Ricardo Soares de Oliveira is Professor of the International Politics of Africa at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford; Official Fellow of St Peter's College; and a non-resident Fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute, Berlin.  He is co-editor of African Affairs, the journal of the Royal African Society, and co-director of the Oxford Martin School’s Programme on African Governance. He is the author  of Magnificent and Beggar Land: Angola Since the Civil War (2015) and Oil and Politics in the Gulf of Guinea (2007), and is currently writing a book titled Africa and the Offshore World.

The research seminar will be moderated by Anna-Riikka Kauppinen, Assistant Professor in Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute Geneva, and Pictet Chair in Finance and Development.
