Married...with children? The effect of income shocks on family arrangements
Abstract: The evolution of cultural and social norms has generated a growing interest in the economic literature on family arrangements, also known as cohabitation or co-residency of elderly parents with their adult children. This paper addresses the cohabitation decision; more specifically, it tries to answer if a non-contributory pension could alter the co-residency decision of older adults. Using state-level data and information from a cross-sectional household survey with spatial data from Mexico, I evaluate a state-level program that operated in Mexico between 2003 and 2019. The empirical strategy involves the use of Synthetic Difference in Differences Estimation and also a Regression Discontinuity Design. Results show a reduction in the elderly's employment condition and the percentage of cohabitation with their adult children.
