An Introduction to the African Union Environmental Treaties

In today’s global landscape, environmental protection has emerged as a paramount concern, drawing increasing attention from both international and regional bodies. The African Union (AU) stands at the forefront of these efforts, yet its contributions remain underexplored in scholarly discourse. Introduction to the African Union Environmental Treaties by Amb. Dr. Namira Negm aims to address this gap by delving into the AU’s legal frameworks for environmental conservation. The book traces the evolution of environmental law within Africa, shedding light on its colonial legacy and subsequent transition towards sustainable resource management.

It highlights pivotal moments such as the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 and the subsequent formation of the AU in 1999, underscoring the continent's commitment to unity and solidarity in the post-colonial era. With a focus on environmental treaties, the volume compiles continental agreements aimed at safeguarding Africa’s rich natural heritage. It offers insightful commentary to elucidate the evolution of environmental legal concepts within the AU framework. By mapping out regional environmental protection initiatives, the book aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of African approaches to sustainable development.
