The Benefits and Costs of Diversity: Lessons from Economic History
In this session of the International Macro History Online Seminar, join us for a presentation on "The Benefits and Costs of Diversity: Lessons from Economic History'" by Joel Mokyr (Northwestern University)
Joel Mokyr is Robert H. Strotz Professor of Economics at Northwestern University. He conducts research on the economic history of Europe, and specializes in the period 1750-1914. His current research is concerned with the understanding of the economic and intellectual roots of technological progress and the growth of useful knowledge in European societies, as well as the impact that industrialization and economic progress have had on economic welfare. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, and the Cliometric Society as well as the British Academy, the Italian Accademia dei Lincei and the Dutch Royal Academy. He has been the President of the Economic History Association, editor in chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History, and a co-editor of the Journal of Economic History. He is currently co-editor of a book series, the Princeton University Press Economic History of the World.
Chair: Nathan Sussman is Full Professor of International Economics at the Geneva Graduate Institute, Pictet Chair in Finance and Development, and Director of the Centre for Finance and Development. He was Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and in the integrated Philosophy, Economics, and Political Science Programme (PEP) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was the Director of the Research Department at the Bank of Israel and a voting member of the Monetary Policy Committee. His fields of expertise are monetary and financial economic history. He has written numerous articles and co-authored a book on emerging markets and financial globalisation.
Future IMHOS seminars
The spring 2024 sessions of the International Macro History Online Seminar will run from the 21st of February to the 22nd of May 2024 and will take place virtually bi-weekly* on Wednesdays at 17:00 (Geneva time). The seminars will run for 60 minutes with an extra optional 15 minutes for further discussion.
