The talk will examine the attacks on global rule by various anti-globalist, neo-nationalist, far right and white male supremacist movements in the developed west. International lawyers are obviously concerned. How should they understand these attacks and respond to them? Many have suggested that the attacks emerge from frustration by those “left behind”. Does that really apply to developments in Poland or Hungary, for example? Is this not more a type of cultural reaction? What role have identity politics, expert rule and neoliberalism played in occasioning it? How to respond? Surely not by suggesting more reform of global institutions. How then?
