Current migration trends around the world present unprecedented challenges to the international community.  In this context, a series of multilateral initiatives have been launched, the most relevant of them being the UN Global Compact for Migration. The Conference will explore to what extent these recent initiatives are feasible tools to address the current situation and to protect the human rights of migrants.

Felipe González Morales, is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants. He is a former President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, where he was also a Commissioner and the Rapporteur on Migrants and Refugees between 2008 and 2015. Professor of International Law at Diego Portales University, in Santiago, Chile, where he is also the Director of a Master in International Human Rights Law. He is an Honorific Professor at University Carlos III of Madrid, where he teaches International Human Rights Law at a series of postgraduate programs since 2003, as well as in several other universities in Spain. He also teaches regularly at American University Human Rights Academy in Washington, D.C., and has been Tinker Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor González was the founder and first Director of the Center for Human Rights at Diego Portales University. He was also the founder and first Director of a Latin American Network of Human Rights Legal Clinics. Formerly Representative in Latin America for the International Human Rights Law Group. Holds a Doctorate and a Master in Advanced Human Rights from University Carlos III and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from American University.
